Carter’s second term
Charles Hurt writes at the
Washington Times:
It has taken three decades, but Americans are finally living through Jimmy Carter’s second term. Now we’ve got Jimmy Jr. barking at us from the White House about eating our peas and ripping off our Band-Aid. He might not even let us have our Social Security checks. These are just the latest in a long line of nagging lectures.

I remember sitting in our den in Pearl Harbor watching Carter give his malaise speech. At one point my husband turned to me with a look like he was searching his mind for a thought and he is a man who almost never uses bad language. He said, “That man is a … a … an … an a**hole.” It was as if he’d had an epiphany and discovered what the word really meant. Apart from having a good laugh, I didn’t think much of it at the time but recently I saw a video of the speech and was really shocked at Carter’s tone of voice. He spoke exactly like an angry adult speaks to an incorrigible and unlikeable child. #12 may be right: he may have loved America, it was just Americans he couldn’t stand.
