America’s direct and indispensable involvement in the capture of Kaddafi

As today’s NY Times describes in detail, a U.S. Predator drone and a French warplane attacked the convoy containing Kaddafi that was fleeing the besieged town of Surt, which led to Kaddafi abandoning his vehicle and fleeing on foot and then being captured and killed.

Thus at every stage of this civil war, from rescuing the rebels in Bengaze, to fortifying them and driving the government forces back to Tripoli, to the bomb attacks on Kaddafi’s compound in Tripoli which led to the fall of his regime, to the siege of Surt, to Kaddafi’s final capture and killing, the U.S. and its NATO allies have been instrumental in the defeat and now the death of Kaddafi. Will the supporters of this completely unjustified and illegal action, who up to this point have had the audacity to claim that NATO all along has been acting within its UN mandate of “stopping the slaughter of civilians,” claim that the capture and killing of the deposed dictator was necessary to stop the slaughter of civilians?
