The Sarkozy-Merkel soap opera

Do Sarkozy and Merkel think it enhances their stature and helps their public image constantly to be having these partly anxious, partly intimate, partly hostile tête-à-têtes before the camera? These queasily uncomfortable photographs remind us that there’s a reason why, at least prior to the euro crisis, political leaders have always conducted their negotiations away from the public eye.
