The best explanation of hypergamy I’ve seen
The entry entitled “Honor killing, or Eloidom?”, turned into a discussion on “Hypergamy, or Eloidom?” Reader Jim R. said that what drives white women to intimacy with nonwhite men who kill them is not Eloi-hood (i.e. non-judgmental suicidal passivity), but hypergamy (the female preference for high-status men). I replied that female Eloi-hood and contemporary women’s attraction to dangerous men (though I wasn’t sure that this was the same thing as hypergamy) are two aspects of the same phenomenon. Now another reader, Expatriot, has sent a superb comment explaining why and how hypergamy in the conditions of contemporary society is radically different from hypergamy in traditional society.
