The lynch mob as a primitive religious phenomenon

As Thomas Bertonneau observes, the photograph at the beginning of the entry, “And they say religion is on the decline in America!”,

illustrates the Imitatio Trayvoni, a neo-pagan, unself-aware, self-obliterating mimetic reaction by which the crowd forms itself and becomes a threat to anyone who is unassimilable to it.
