Family wiped out as result of attempt to rescue their dog

One of my peeves is the insanity of the modern pet owner, especially of the white, urban variety. Dogs have become the new choice in lieu of children. Books, poems, and even love songs for Fido have become the norm rather than the exception. It is a billion dollar industry. Anthropomorphism has become so widespread and extreme among pet owners that human beings are now second-class citizens.

As a case in point, here is a story about a family of four in Northern California. Three of them are now dead, drowned as a result of attempting to rescue their dog. The father tried to save the dog from the ocean, and he went down, so the mother and son attempted to save him and were drowned in turn. The daughter is all that is left. In an ironic twist, the dog survived. He managed to take care of himself quite adequately. I like animals and I specifically moved to the country to be in and around nature on a daily basis. But my attitude towards animals is more like that of a farmer. I recognize the difference between animals and humans, and have no guilt treating the two accordingly.
